What file types can I upload and how does conversion work?

You've got amazing content in different formats scattered across your devices: Zoom recordings, iPhone voice memos, video files from your course platform. The good news? You don't need to worry about converting everything to the "right" format before uploading.

What You'll Accomplish

By the end of this guide, you'll have:

✅ A clear understanding of which file types Hello Audio accepts

✅ Knowledge of how the automatic conversion process works

✅ Confidence to upload any supported media format without technical stress

This takes about 3 minutes to read, and you'll never wrestle with file formats again.

Why Automatic Conversion Matters

Hello Audio automatically converts all your media files to MP3 format because it's the most compatible audio format across podcast apps. This means your listeners can access your content seamlessly, whether they use Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or any other podcast player.

You're transforming screen-time content into listen-time experiences, and we handle the technical details behind the scenes.

Step 1: Understanding Supported File Types

Hello Audio accepts a wide range of media formats:

Audio Formats

  • MP3 (already optimized, uploads instantly)

  • M4A (what Zoom and iOS Voice Memos create)

  • WAV (high-quality audio files)

  • OGG/OGA (web-based audio formats)

Video Formats

  • MP4 (most common video format)

  • M4V (iTunes and Apple device videos)

  • MOV (iPhone and Mac video recordings)

  • AVI (Windows video format)

  • WEBM (web-based video format)

You can upload a mix of different file types at the same time. Hello Audio will handle each one appropriately.

Step 2: How to Upload Your Files

In your feed dashboard, you'll see a drag-and-drop area above your episode list.

Upload Methods

  • Drag and drop: drag files from your computer directly into the upload box

  • Click to browse: click the upload area to open your computer's file selection dialog

Both methods work the same way and start the conversion process immediately. Before you upload a batch, How do I prepare my files before uploading? shows you how to name files so episodes land in the right order.

Step 3: Understanding the Conversion Process

Once you upload a non-MP3 file, here's what happens:

  1. Upload completes: your file is securely stored

  2. Conversion begins: automatic conversion to MP3 starts

  3. Processing time: takes a few minutes, depending on file length

  4. Completion: a media player appears so you can preview your audio

During Conversion

While your file converts, you'll see the in-progress state in two places.

In your episode list, a clock icon appears in the Publish column and the Status stays "Unpublished." Hover over the clock and you'll see this note:

"Processing: Your media is being converted to mp3 audio. Refresh the page to see the updated status. Feel free to leave the page or edit the episode as processing will continue in the background."

Inside the episode itself, the Status reads "Still processing..." with the toggle switched off, and the Player Preview shows 0:00 / 0:00 until conversion finishes.

Both are normal and mean everything's working. You don't need to wait on either screen. Refresh the page (or come back later) and the status will update, with the player ready to preview once conversion completes.

What Happens Next

After successful conversion, you'll have an MP3 file optimized for podcast delivery. Your listeners will receive audio that plays smoothly in their preferred podcast app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the conversion message never change?

If the conversion appears stuck, the process may have encountered an issue. Click Replace Media under the message to re-upload and restart conversion. See How do I replace or re-upload media files? for the full walkthrough.

Why won't my file upload?

Check that your file is in a supported format from the list above. If it is, try refreshing the page and uploading again.

Why does the audio quality seem poor?

Video files are converted to audio automatically, but the original audio quality affects the final result. For best results, make sure your original recordings have clear audio.

Why is conversion taking a very long time?

Large files or very long recordings take more time to convert. Files over an hour may take 10-15 minutes. If it's been longer than 30 minutes, try the Replace Media option.

What if I uploaded the wrong file?

No problem! You can replace any media file even after conversion is complete. Click Replace Media and upload the correct file.

Do I need to convert my files to MP3 before uploading?

Not at all! Hello Audio handles conversion automatically. Upload your original files and we'll take care of the rest.

Will video files lose their visual content?

Yes, we extract only the audio from video files since Hello Audio delivers audio-only content to podcast apps.

What's the maximum file size I can upload?

Hello Audio accepts large files (up to 4GB), but very large files (over 500MG) may take longer to upload and convert.

Can I upload files recorded on my phone?

Yes! iPhone voice memos (M4A) and most phone video recordings are fully supported.

What happens if my internet connection drops during upload?

You'll need to restart the upload. Make sure you have a stable connection for large files.

Can I see the original file after conversion?

The system stores the converted MP3 version. If you need the original, keep a backup on your computer.
